Tragedy strikes the Amateur Motocross World
Willie "Superfly" McCormick died on October 8th, 2005 while racing in a motocross event at the Extreme Motorsports Complex in Airway Heights, Washington. The 10-year-old had been racing since age 4 and had won over 100 trophies during his six year racing career. Willie was determined that he would one day be a pro racer like his idol Bubba Stewart. That dream ended when he crashed during the last race of the day on October 8th. Willie was well respected by kids and adults alike and could be found between races either talking to younger riders, his peers, or the pros who rode at events in which he competed. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful ability to relate to everyone.
One of Willies greatest attributes was his willingness to accept anyone into his world regardless of their abilities or interests. Willie as a loyal friend and even at the age of 10 loved his country, his flag, the pledge of allegiance, and our countrys national anthem. Willies grandfather (thats me) spoke at the service held to celebrate Willies life and part of what was said is, "one of the best experiences for both Willie and his family was the experience of becoming a part of the racing community." Willie and his family felt from the very beginning that the racing community is truly one where (barring the need to dodge pit bikes being ridden by the fathers) children can roam around freely without the fear of being bothered. It is also a community where one is accepted regardless of station in life. It is also a community where everyone is a winner in spite of where one finishes in a race.
To beat another rider is an honor, but to defeat the track is no less of an honor and that is why you see winners and the other riders giving each other "high fives" after each race. Willie will be missed sorely by his immediate family and the family he found at the race tracks where he competed. To honor Willies contribution to the sport of motocross/supercross a statue will be erected in his honor in the family picnic area of the Extreme Motorsports Complex and the portion of track where Willie died has been renamed after him. Also a Willie McCormick Sportsmanship Award will be presented annually to the rider that best displays Willies attitude toward riding and other riders.
Willies family continues to be totally committed to racing and has established the Willie McCormick Youth Foundation to help other youngsters like Willie to pursue their passions and dreams. The foundation will fund beginning riders as well as other children needs such as early childhood vision testing, tutoring for children who might be struggling in school, and other as yet to be determined childrens needs. Willies family and friends have said good-bye to a wonderful little boy, but not to his dreams and desire to be involved in the lives of others who need someone to care about them.
Dont know if this will work, but struggle everyday just
